I thought it was not only a great poem but a poem I should share with others. Often times we think and believe we know what is best for us…. I believe everything happens for a reason and that God has planned our lives in a way in which we will grow not only stronger but wiser. With time and age, my belief in faith and god have only grown and this poem makes complete sense…to me at least.
I asked for strength…
I asked for strength and
God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom and
God gave me problems to solve.
I asked for prosperity and
God gave me brawn and brains to work.
I asked for courage and
God gave me dangers to overcome.
I asked for patience and
God placed me in situations where I was forced to wait.
I asked for love and
God gave me troubled people to help.
I asked for favors and
God gave me opportunities.
I received nothing I wanted
I received everything I needed.

What did Aristotle mean by, “happiness depends upon ourselves”??!
Growing up in a close-knit family, the middle child and the most outspoken and “brave” of the bunch, I’ve often focused my attention on making sure others were ok. How could I help a family member or friend in need? If someone was needing a hand to hold or a shoulder to cry on, I would drop all my responsibilities to be there. I have always spoken up for others, I’ve always been the voice of others….at times, forgetting my own voice.
At the age of twenty-three, I have begun searching for my own identity. Who am I? What do i really believe in? Forgetting what has been instilled in me, what I’ve been taught to be the “right thing to do”, and ignoring others’ judgements….not completely, of course, but just enough to decide for myself what Joanna really wants and needs.
After years and years of putting others before me, I’ve realized that it’s ok to be selfish once in a while. We can’t always be there for our “best friends” and we can’t always do what others ask of us. I have spent the past months focusing on me, working on MY goals and dreams, celebrating my own achievements, following my own beliefs…and it has felt great!
I am searching for that balance…in relation to myself, others, work, pleasure. A healthy balance. Like Aristotle said, ‘Happiness depends upon ourselves’. We can’t go on living our lives depending on someone else to make us happy or to be in control of our emotions. To be there every single time we are down or every single time we are needing to celebrate an achievement. Another great quote, (from Oprah) “Don’t wait for someone else to complete you”. Complete yourself.
BIG SIGH!!!! 🙂
